FRONTLINE UPDATES: OCTOBER 2026

Humanitarian Crisis in Oleshky

The city of Oleshky in southern Ukraine has endured russian occupation since the beginning of the full-scale invasion. Before the invasion, an estimated 24,000 Ukrainians lived in Oleshky. Now, just 2,000 are left.

russian occupiers have blocked outside attempts to provide humanitarian aid in order to starve the remaining residents. Residents hang signs on their fences reading “no food, we’re starving too.” Animals have disappeared from the streets. The local hospital has completely run out of medical supplies and lacks electricity or running water.

Attempts to provide humanitarian reprieve have been met with lethal resistance from the russian occupiers. russian drones and landmines have destroyed food convoys and killed civilians trying to bring food into the city. Airdrop supplies are confiscated by the russian occupiers.

Residents are left with a harrowing ultimatum: stay, and risk starvation, or flee and take their chances on the “road to death,” an escape route littered with russian mines and terrorized by russian drones. In September, of the 60 residents that tried to escape, only 12 managed to reach Ukrainian-controlled territory.

The forced starvation of civilians is not a new tactic for the russians. In the early 1930’s, the soviets inflicted the Holodomor— a state-orchestrated mass-famine— upon Ukraine, killing an estimated 3 to 5 million people.

Unfortunately, there does not seem to be any immediate sign of reprieve for the Ukrainians of Oleshky.

Operation Vivaldi

Ukraine’s offensive operation in the Donetsk oblast, Operation Vivaldi, has reported numerous major successes in the month of September. More than 125 square kilometers of territory were recaptured by Ukrainian forces, with the villages of Ridkodub, Nove, and Katerynivka being fully liberated. russian forces saw 2,000 casualties with an additional 250 taken prisoner in an unprecedented mass-surrender. Ukraine hopes to trade the russian captives for Ukrainian POW’s in the future.

The success of the operation comes despite large disadvantages in manpower in the region. To make up for this disadvantage, Ukraine utilized unmanned ground drones dropped into enemy territory, once again proving that Ukrainian ingenuity and determination are capable of overcoming even the largest obstacles.

russia Escalates Hybrid War Against NATO Countries

The term hybrid war refers to a strategy of warfare that blends conventional combat with irregular tactics such as cyberattacks, sabotage, and disinformation campaigns to destabilize an adversary with staying below the threshold of an open war. This is the strategy russia has been employing, and in recent months escalating, against its neighbors.

Last month, we reported on a russian plot to use drones to attack a German airport. In the past month, we’ve seen further escalations. A russian drone crashed in Moldova. A russian frigate fired flares and narrowly missed a Danish helicopter. A Polish satellite communications station caught fire, and is highly suspected to be the result of russian sabotage. russian strikes have hit near the borders of Moldova, Romania, and Poland.

Many analysts interpret these attacks as an attempt to divide NATO by testing and threatening their resolve. Denmark’s defense intelligence service warns of a “low but growing risk” that russia may launch a limited military attack on a neighboring country, and that intensified hybrid attacks in the form of cyberwarfare and false-flag operations are likely.
