FRONTLINE UPDATES: AUGUST 2026
On August 4, Ukraine’s “40 Days of Pressure” operation came to an end. While the stated goal of pushing russia into accepting a ceasefire did not come to fruition (and was optimistic given russia’s proven willingness to endlessly sacrifice the lives of its own people to pursue its imperialist goals), the operation did achieve a long list of significant tactical victories. More than 100 strategic facilities were struck by Ukrainian forces over the course of the 40-day operation, with dire implications for russian’s military and economic footing.
Continued Strikes on Oil Energy Facilities
All 11 of russia’s largest oil refineries, dozens of fuel depots, pumping stations, and oil terminals were hit by Ukrainian forces. russia’s crude oil refining capabilities have now fallen to 2002 levels, or roughly two-thirds of its pre-war output. Losses from this past month alone are estimated at around $13.5 billion, which represents a significant amount. In addition to the ground facilities, around 200 shadow fleet vessels were hit in the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea.
Defense-Industrial Programs Disrupted
russia’s defense-industrial programs were significantly disrupted by Ukrainian deep-strike attacks that hit air bases, air defenses, command posts, warships, and logistics infrastructure. Vital facilities related to the production of ballistic missiles, including a microelectronics plant, were also hit. These facilities typically house foreign-built components that are difficult and time-consuming to replace, especially given the sanctions currently imposed on russia.
Frontline Victories
On the front line, 21,000 russian targets were hit, including 5,000 russian troops who were reported killed and thousands more casualties who were either missing or injured. Ukraine repelled several major mechanized assaults, maintained defensive positions along some of the most heated areas on the front, and even made ground during offensive operations in some areas.
Russian Warehouses Reduced to Rubble
Perhaps one of the most successful operations in the past month was Ukraine’s attack on the Wildberries warehouses—the russian Amazon equivalent that supplies the russian military with wartime supplies such as drone components, night vision goggles, combat helmets, and ammunition pouches. In the past month, at least 20 sites related to Wildberries operations, including over one million square meters of warehouse space, have been damaged or destroyed. In addition to the logistical implications for the russian military, the devastating damage to the Wildberries facilities will likely have severe repercussions for the russian economy. Tens of thousands of russian businesses have had their entire inventory reduced to ash in a matter of weeks. As Wildberries’ sales have dropped 50% in the last month, russian analysts sensibly predict a wave of bankruptcies that could be devastating for their retail sector. Strikes against Wildberries warehouses continue on a near-daily basis.

Ultimately, the 40 Days of Pressure achieved numerous tactical successes and proved to russia and the rest of the world that Ukraine not only continues to stand tall, but is capable of dictating the pace of war on its own terms.
As of now, the russian economy has proven resilient, but the cracks are beginning to show. Inflation, taxes, and interest rates continue to spike. The war is no longer “the war over there” for the russian people—it’s now been delivered to their doorstep. One of Ukraine’s greatest advantages, as it often historically is for defending nations at war, is its determination to maintain its sovereignty against foreign invaders. The will of the russian people, who have nothing to gain and everything to lose in a war of aggression, is now being tested.
